Chengde (Chinese: 承德; pinyin: Chéngdé) is a prefecture-level city in Hebei province as well as one of the ancient cities in China. It is situated in northeast of Beijing, located on the transitional zone from the inner Mongolia Plateau to the North Plain, with forested mountains and valleys and numerous fantastic stone formations on the surrounding mountains, of which the most striking are Mt.Luohan (Arhat) and Sledge Hammer Peak. In 1985, the city was listed as one of China's Top Ten scenic Spots.
It embraces the Mountain Summer Resort, the largest and the best preserved imperial garden existing today in China. Another popular attraction of Chengde City is Sledgehammer Peak, a large rock formation in the shape of an inverted sledgehammer. A variety of other mountains, valleys, and grasslands lie within the borders of the city.
The older name of Chengde is Rehe or Jehol, regionally from the name for the local river which translates as "hot river". The river was so named because it did not freeze in the winter. Most sections of the river are currently dry because of a new damming project.
In addition, Chengde is a historical and cultural city, so it is rich in colorful folk arts. If you travel to Chengde, you can bring some folk arts home for memory.
