Dunhuang(Chinese: 敦煌;pinyin: dūnhuáng), long ago referred to as "desert oasis", in the north of Gansu Province. It once prospered as the last stop on the Silk road and was the hub of middle and eastern silk routes before it split north and south to skirt the Taklamakan Desert. Dunhuang was prompted to become the most open area in international trade in Chinese history and provided the only access westward for the Chinese Empire and eastward for western nationalities. Dunhuang is renowned the Mogao Caves, one of the three famous ancient sculptural sites of China and one of the finest examples of Buddhist art. It has attracted thousands of tourists from both home and abroad to experience the ancient splendid culture on the Silk Road.
