Karamay is a prefecture-level city, situated in northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region at the edge of the Junggar Basin. Karamay comes from the Uyghur language, and means "black oil". It gained this name because one of the largest oil fields in China was discovered here in 1955. Since then, the city has grown into an oil-producing and refining center.
