Nanning (Chinese: 南宁; pinyin: Nánníng), the beautiful capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in south China, is known as a “Green City” because of its abundant trees and gardens. This picturesque city is practically enveloped in lush trees and blooming flowers, and is justly referred to as a city “composed half of buildings, half of trees”. Nanning is the jumping off point for scenic Guilin, with its world famous hill-scape, northern and western Guangxi and its minority villages, and the border with Vietnam in the south.
Since ancient times, Nanning has been a commercial centre occupying a place of strategic importance on China’s southern border, because of its location to the north of Vietnam. It is the only one of the five minority nationality autonomous regions of China with its position along China’s southern coast which provides many advantages. The Yongjiang River, which passes through the city, has witnessed tremendous changes over the past 1680 years. Today Nanning is not only geographically central in Guangxi, but is also central in the areas of politics, economics, culture, science and technology, education, finance and information.
Nanning covers a total area of over 22,000 square kilometres, of which the city proper12 constitutes 6476 square kilometres. It has a population of more than 6 million, of which 2.4 million are urban residents13. Over 30 distinct ethnic groups14 inhabit Nanning, including the Zhuang, Miao, Yao, Hui, Dong, Mulao and Maonan, with the Zhuang making up more than 50% of the city’s total population. The Zhuang are the largest of China’s entire ethnic group, and has its own spoken and written languages.
From 1999, Nanning International Folk Song Arts Festival is held annually in the early of November, the best season in Nanning. Now it has become a cultural pageant with extensive influence both home and abroad. What’s more, Nanning is the import economic centre along shore of Beibu Bay15 with superior geographic position. The addressing of the yearly China—ASEAN Exposition(中国-东盟博览会) is fixed in Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Centre17 since 2004. |
