Qufu is a city in Shandong Province, China. It is located about 130 km south of the provincial capital Jinan. Qufu is the legendary birthplace of Confucius; it served as the capital of the State of Lu during the Spring and Autumn Period. The Temple of Confucius, Cemetery of Confucius, and the Kong Family Mansion in Qufu, have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1994. They are the major cultural attractions of Qufu.
Qufu has a history of more than 5000 years; the center of the Oriental Culture since the ancient times; used to be the onetime capital of Shengnong where Huangdi lived; in the Shang and Yin dynasty, the capital of Lu State; during the Spring and Autumn Period as well as the Warring States, the birth place of Mencius; and also used to be an educational center at that time.
