Xiahe perches at a height of 2,090 meters (6860 feet) in a mountain valley at the edge of the Tibetan plateau and the town's population is a mix of Hui, Tibetan, and Han Chinese. It has not only just the amazing sights of the Labrang Monastery and the Sangke Grassland , but also the vibrant atmosphere. The locals and nomads in the village live a laid-back lifestyle. The town is also a thoroughfare for inbound pilgrims from Qinghai and Tibet. For backpackers, Xiahe is the traffic hub either northwards to Gansu or southwards to Sichuan.
