Dujiangyan Irrigation Project
|
Dujiangyan Irrigation Project is the oldest and only surviving no-dam irrigation system in the world. This engineering marvel was built 2,000 years ago. It has been used as crop irrigation as well as flood regulating. This area is the most fertile land in China which is benefited from this water system. |
| Dujiangyan Irrigation Project (Chinese: 都江堰;pinyin: dūjiāngyàn): Dujiangyan Irrigation Project is the oldest and only surviving no-dam irrigation system in the world. It is located on the Minjiang River and 59 kilometers away from Chengdu. In 256 BC, during the Warring States Period, the governor of the Shu Prefecture, Li Bing and his son organized the building of this dam to regulate the flood on the Chengdu plains. During the past two thousand years, the whole project has worked perfectly. It serves not only as flood regulating but also as a steady flow for crop irrigation, as well as a means to facilitate shipping and wood drifting. It has contributed greatly to the richness of Chengdu Plain and helped it earn its reputation as "The Land of Abundance".
The Dujiangyan Irrigation Project consists of three parts. Yuzui, like a big fish lying in the Minjiang River, is a watershed dividing the river into two parts. Feishayan, a spillway diverts the sand and stones of the inner river into the outer river. Baopingkou, like a neck of a bottle, is used to bring water into the inner river from Minjiang. They ara scientifically designed to automatically control the water flow of the rivers from the mountains to the plains throughout the year. |
