Mount Emei is one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China. Great spectacles of Mount Emei include the sunrise and Clouds Sea seen from the Golden Summit of the mountain. |
| Mount Emei (Chinese: 峨眉山;pinyin: éméishān): Mount Emei is one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China. There are three main peaks with a sheer drop of over 1,000 (3,000 feet) in Mount Emei, namely Wanfo Ding, Qianfo Ding and Jin Ding. Its main peak, the Golden Summit (Jin Ding), is 3079.3 meters (10,103 feet) above the sea level, seemingly reaching the sky. Temples were built as early as the Eastern Han Dynasty (24-220) and Buddhism was introduced to the mountain during the Jin Dynasty. In the Ming and Qing dynasties there were more than 150 temples. A legend claims that the Bodhisattva of Universal Benevolence, Puxian, who is said to have ascended the mountain during the 6th century atop a six-tusked elephant. The main scenic spots on the mountain include Baoguo Temple, Wannian Temple, Qingyin Pavilion and Golden Summit. |
