Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family, in the gloriously colorful style which is a lot different from the northern China, constructed began in 1894. It was sponsored by the Chen of Guangdong Province and it used to be a temple worship ancestor and lodging for the Chen members' studying or taking part in the imperial civil service examination. Located on Zhongshan 7 Road, now the temple has a history of more than 100 years and still in its original shape. When time went by, it gradually became as a school and served the purpose of education for the local.
Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family is composed of six courtyards, nine main halls, and nineteen buildings. With a traditional Guangdong style architecture, the temple is especially renowned for its exquisite and mythical decorations, such as the brick carvings of historic figures.
All the buildings are ingeniously decorated with a variety of sculptures of wood, stone and brick relieves modeled in pottery and lime, and frescos and copper-iron castings in various styles. The corridors of the temple were engraved with about 20 woodcarvings of dynasties historica stories and folklores, such as "Battle at Chibi", so that it reputed as "The Corridor of Chinese Historical Story by wood engraving and steel knife carving".
In 1959, it deserved the name of "A bright pearl of the architecture in Lingnan Region" and known as the site of the Museum of Guangdong Folk Arts and Crafts which was primary for collecting, preserving, researching and displaying the folk arts and crafts of all previous dynasties of Guangdong .
The Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family honored as the ten most top beautiful tourism scenery of Guangzhou in 1996. It attracts lots of people to visit.
