Mogao Caves
|
Mogao Caves are one of the three famous ancient sculptural sites of China and contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art spanning a period of 1,000 years. |
| Mogao Caves(Chinese: 莫高窟;pinyin: mògāokū) are one of the three famous ancient sculptural sites of China and located at the eastern foot of Mount Mingsha, southeast of Dunhuang County. According to local legend, in 366 AD a Buddhist monk had a vision of a thousand Buddhas under showers of golden rays and began to inspire the excavation of the caves he envisioned. It lasted for ten dynasties between the 4th and 11th centuries A.D.. Today, the 492 cells and sanctuaries in Mogao are famous for their statues and wall paintings, spanning 1,000 years of Buddhist art. The largest statue is 34.5 meters (113 feet) high and the smallest mere 2 centimeters (0.79 inches) high. The 42,000 m² (450,000 square feet) wall paintings form the most fascinating repository of Buddhist art in China. In 1987, UNESCO placed the Mogao Caves under the protection of the world cultural heritage list. |
