Overhanging Great Wall
|
The Overhanging Great Wall is an extended part of the Jiayuguan Pass, and was once an important component in the medieval military defense system. |
The Overhanging Great Wall (Chinese: 悬臂长城;pinyin: xuánbìchángchéng) is an extended part of the Jiayuguan Pass, and was once an important component in the medieval military defense system. It is a restored section of the Great Wall dating to the 16th century, that once linked the fort to the mountains. Built on the eastern slope of Mt. Heishan (Black Mountain) the Great Wall appears very like a dragon overhanging the slope, hence the name. The wall was built by using local gravel and yellow earth, layer upon layer, and consists of the main path, battlements and three observation posts. Its imposing appearance and manner are very much like those of Badaling Great Wall in Beijing, so it is reputed as 'the Western Badaling Great Wall'.
