Solitary Joy Temple
|
Solitary Joy Temple is one of the oldest and best-preserved tall wooden structures in China and famous for its Eleven-face Kwan-yin. |
Solitary Joy Temple (Chinese: 独乐寺; pinyin: Dúlè Sì) is one of the oldest and best-preserved tall wooden structures in China. It is located inside the western gate of Jixian, 11 kilometers northwest of the urban Tianjin.
Originally built in the Tang Dynasty and rebuilt in 984 AD during the Liao Dynasty, the Solitary Joy Temple is now a specially protected historical relic by the government. The Kwan-yin Tower, one of the main buildings of the temple, is 23 meters high with 24 different kinds of arches, and shows a superb architectural skill. It survived 28 earthquakes, including 3 destructive ones, and it is still magnificent and unshakable. In the tower, there is a 16-meter-high and eleven-faced Bodhisattva known as the "Eleven-face Kwan-yin", noted as one of the largest painted clay sculptures in China.
The Solitary Joy Temple is magnificent and elegant, more over, is very mysterious that all the architectures in the temple were built without nail. |
