The Eight Outer Monasteries

The Eight Outer Monasteries around the wall of the Mountain Summer Resort is famous for its unique temples.

The Eight Outer Monasteries (Chinese: 外八角; pinyin: Wàibājiǎo) around the wall of the Mountain Resort of Chengde in Hebei Province lies an orderly array of twelve brilliant and golden temples. Viewing the Eight Outer Monasteries from above, it looks as though Emperor Kangxi built a Disneyland for China's religions. Originally each of the temples was built to reflect the architectural styles of a different minority group. The Eight Outer Monasteries are grouped on the eastern and northern slopes of the Mountain Resort in two different sections close to the Wulie River.

The temples include the Anyuan, Temple of Universal Joy, Temple of Universal Love, Temple of General Peace, Xumi Fushou Temple, Shuxiang, and Putuozongcheng Temple and so on. These temples are arrayed around the Mountain Resort on the eastern and northern sides just like stars surrounding the moon in a semicircle.

All the temples are in color tile, looking glinting compared with the elegant but plain Mountain Summer Resort. Each temple has its background and owns its unique features. The constructions of the Eight Outer Monasteries show a harmonic combination of the Han, Mongolian and Tibetan architectural style. The example is that, the Shuxiang Temple on the Wutai Mountain, and the Hall of Arhats in the Anguo Temple in Haining County, represent Northern and Southern China. These Temples in Tibetan, Mongolian as well as the Han architectural styles, are not just a simple imitation, but a new creation.

Together with the Mountain Summer Resort, the Eight Outer Monasteries made the list of the Chinese Emphatic Preservation Unit of Cultural Relics in 1994. The architecture, garden as well as the tablet, carving and joss are all good relics for us to learn the culture, religion arts and landscape arts of Qing Dynasty.
