Fenghuang Ancient City (Chinese: 凤凰古城; pinyin: Fènghuáng Gǔchéng) is a historical, cultural and picturesque ancient town in the western border area of Hunan Province. It was ever praised as the most beautiful city in China by Rewi Alley, a renowned author in New Zealand.
Fenghuang Ancient City was originally built in the early Qing Dynasty and maintains its initial appearance after three hundred years of vicissitude. Most of the wooden buildings in the town were built by Miao and Han people in the same time as the ancient city was initially built. Until now, the classical architectures have been kept intact, including the primitively simple and tranquil slabastone or flagstone paved streets. Many ethnics such as Tujia, Miao, Han, Hui people etc reside in Fenghuang Ancient City.
Beautiful and famous flower belt of the Miao people and brocade of the Tujia people are sold every where in the street of the city. It is good for collecting and learning the minorities’ culture. Besides the charming landscape of the city, the characteristic cate such as the acid fish of Miao Group’s, artemisia leaf rice cake etc is also attractive and favorable. If you visit there happen to meet festivals or the big events such as the Bianbianchang of Miao people, you will enjoy joining the minorities’ dancing and singing.
For tourists, Fenghuang Ancient City is a Chinese dream and a wonderland of ancient mysteries.
