|
Jiaxiu Tower is a landmark of Guiyang, which was constructed in 1598 on a tortoise-shaped rock jutting out of Nanming River. |
| (Chinese: 甲秀楼;pinyin: jǎ xiù lóu): Jiaxiu Tower, which is also called "the First Scholar's Tower", was constructed in 1598 on a tortoise-shaped rock jutting out of Nanming River. It is a landmark of Guiyang. The 29 m (95 ft) high, three-storied wooden tower is connected to the banks by the arched Fuyu (Floating Jade) Bridge, made of solid stone. It was built as an inspirational meeting place for the imperial civil service examinations. The name Jiaxiu literally means "getting the best marks in imperial examination'. The tower now is a teahouse decorated with antique poetry scrolls. Its upper floor offers views of Guiyang's modern downtown district. A cultural as well as a historical relic, Jiaxiu Tower houses the authentic works and paintings of many ancient calligraphers'. |
