Temple of General Peace

The Temple of General Peace was built imitating the form of the Sanmoye Temple in Tibet.

Temple of General Peace (Chinese: 普宁寺; pinyin: Pǔ Níng Sì) is one of the eight most famous temples outside the Mountain Summer Resort. It lies at the riverside of the Wulie River in the Mountain Summer Resort in City of Chengde.

The Temple of General Peace was built to represent the atmosphere of peace being full of the whole China and all over the world when the Emperor Qianlong calmed down the rebellion of Mongolia tribe in north of Xinjiang in 1755. It was imitated the form of the Sanmoye Temple in Tibet. In 1961, the temple was listed into Chinese emphatic preservation unit of cultural relics.

The Temple of General Peace is huge and there are Heaven Palace, Great Hero Precious Palace and Bell, Drum Towers and so on. The central construction of the temple is Hinayana Palace with 6-layer eaves cumulation and the standing statue of God Mother Bodhisattva with thousands of eyes and hands covered with gold enshrined in it. Besides, there are lots of famous constructions in the temple, such as the Wuliangshou Buddha, which is one of the largest wood-carved statues in China, etc.

In the layout, the temple combined Han style and the characteristic of the Sanmoye Temple of Tibet; hence they are the representatives of Chinese temple art. In a word, the scene of the Temple of General Peace is very unsophisticated and graceful.
