Grand Dam

The Grand Dam is a hydroelectric river dam that spans the Yangtze River.

Grand Dam (Chinese: 三峡大坝; pinyin: Sānxiá Dà Bà), also known as the Three Gorges Dam, is a hydroelectric river dam that spans the Yangtze River in Sandouping of Yichang City, Hubei Province. It is the largest hydro-electric power station in the world.

Launched in 1993, the Grand Dam is 182 meters high and stretches over 2.4 kilometers. The reservoir created by the dam will extend nearly 400 miles upstream. The project consists of a river dam, spillway structures, powerhouse, and buildings for navigation. The total electric generating capacity of the dam will reach 22,500 megawatts. Several generators are yet to be installed; the dam is not expected to become fully operational until about 2011.

The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River has been a dream for generations and will be one of the largest construction projects ever undertaken by mankind. This great dam will provide China with tremendous power generation and flood control services. Each year 15 million people and 1.5 million hectares of farmland will be protected from flood threats by the Grand Dam.

The Grand Dam project will not only fulfill its utilitarian needs, but will also serve as a symbol of pride for the Chinese people.
