Immortals Cave

Immortals Cave is a small cave where historically important finds have been made of prehistoric pottery shards and rice grains as well as the place Lv Dongbing practiced and became immortal according to the legend.

Lushan Mountain Immortals Cave (Chinese: 仙人洞; pinyin: Xiānrén Dòng) is a small cave in Wannian County, Jiangxi Province, where historically important finds have been made of prehistoric pottery shards and rice grains.

Hidden between the northwestern cliffs, the cave is about 30 feet in depth and 20 feet in height. Three Chinese characters “The Immortals Cave” are engraved at the entrance. According to the legend, the cave got its name by Lv Dongbing, a renowned Taoist who spent years here and became immortal.

On the top of the cave lies a huge rock called “Buddha’s Hand”, which reminds people of Buddhists’ residence in the early years. During emperor Jiaqing’s ruling years in the Qing dynasty, Taoists started to live in the cave, and built the Hall of Chunyang in honor of Patriarch Lv. Afterward a famous Daoguan was built and it was popularly known as Temple of the Immortals Cave.

Inside the cave, a spring drops water from above, which brings it the nickname “Dripping Spring”. On the ground, there formed a pond. Stone carvings are engraved on the cliffs around the spring which are the famous highlights on Lushan Mountain. Outside the cave lies a toad-like rock stretching out to cliffs. From the crevices in the rocks grows a pine tree known as Stone Pine, which inspired a famous poem by Chairman Mao during his stay on Lushan Mountain in 1961.
