Junshan Island (Chinese: 君山岛; pinyin: Jūnshān Dǎo) is a lone, mountainous island on Dongting Lake standing opposite the well-known Yueyang Tower, and it is also the most famous scene in the lake with 72 peaks of different sizes.
Junshan Island was originally named as Dongting Island, which means the cavity for the immortals to live in. Times went on it was changed the name from Dongting Island to Junshan Island, in order to commemorate two concubines of the emperor Shun according to the legend.
Junshan Island is a wonderful place to see flora and fauna. You can see varieties of bamboos, rare trees of red and green leaves and the valuable Junshan Silver Tea, as well as the golden tortoise, silver fish and abundant birds. The bamboo on the island includes mottled bamboo, square bamboo, purple bamboo, sincere bamboo and so on. Lots of festivals are hold on the island, such as lotus festival, dragon boat festival and other sporting events on the water, all of these can bring you beautiful memories. The island had a long history of tea-cultivation, and the Silver Tea is reputed as the most valuable treasures on the island.
Junshan Island is listed as the 11th Happy Land under heaven by Chinese Taoist. It is considered an elegant and romantic place for lovers, and a superior relaxing place for the public. |
