Ancient City of Niya
|
The ancient city of Niya, an oasis county in the Taklimakan Desert, was once the site of the Jingjue Kingdom (2 BC-5 A.D.), which was occupied by the western minorities in ancient China. |
| (Chinese: 尼雅古城;pinyin: níyǎ gǔchéng): The ancient city of Niya, an oasis county in the Taklimakan Desert, was once the site of the Jingjue Kingdom (2 BC-5 A.D.), which was a famous kingdom among the 36 kingdoms located in that area and occupied by the western minorities in ancient China. However, the city vanished between 5 A.D. and 10 A.D. and no one knows the actual reason. At the heart of the Taklimakan Desert, some remains of the existing wooden structures, clay Buddhist stupas (shrines), and even a bridge, were found. The site has supplied precious materials to the study of the relationships between the empire located in the Central Plains and ancient kingdoms in the Western Regions. |
