| (Chinese: 艾提尕尔清真寺;pinyin: àitígǎěr qīngzhēnsì): Id Kah Mosque is the largest mosque in Xinjiang and the largest mosque in China. It is a group of old Islamic constructions with strong ethnic style and religious features. It was built in 1442 by Shakesimirzha, the ruler of Kashgaras, as a very small structure and several renovations and enlargements have created it with today's scale and style. The mosque, 140 meters long from north to south and 120 meters wide from east to west, covers an area of 16,800 square meters and consists of the Hall of Prayer, the Doctrine Teaching Hall, the Gate Tower, a pond, and some other accessory structures. The gate of the mosque, built of yellow bricks with the joints pointed with gypsum, has distinct lines. Inside the gate is the Hall of Prayer and the roof is supported by 100 light blue rectangular-shaped pillars. Around the roof and the pillars there are many exquisite carvings and beautiful pictures. It can accommodate as many as 7,000 worshipers at the same time. |
