| (Chinese: 莎车县;pinyin: shāchēxiàn): Yarkand County means earthen city in Turkish because of the earthen walls around the county. For centuries, it was the seat of an ancient Buddhist kingdom and an important commercial center on the southern arm of the Silk Road. This small trading town still retains its quaint atmosphere, which at one time had a bazaar larger than Kashgar. If you have interest to try a bit of a culinary adventure, you can sample some of the traditional specialties, such as laghman, a kind of noodle; poluo, a tasty fried rice pilaf, or even goat's head soup! However, the most popular food here is lamb kebab seasoned with Xinjiang local spices. |
