These caves are among the earilest significant Buddhist monuments in the country. The first cave begun around 420 AD, at the end of the Western Jin Dynasty. Work continued and more grottoes were added during the following dynasties. It lasted for more than a millennium. Most of the caves contain rock-cut statues, clay sculptures, and colorful frescoes. It was famous for its exquisite stone carving. Because of earthquakes, erosion, and looters, altogether there are 183 caves, 694 stone statues, and 82 clay sculptures that remain. Among the statues, the most impressive one is an 27 meters (89 feet) high seated statue of Maitreya (the Future Buddha), and the smallest is a miniscule 25 centimeters. Cave No. 169, dates to 420 AD, and contains a Buddha and two Bodhisattvas that are among the oldest and best preserved in China. |
