Longji Rice Terraced Field

The Longji Rice Terraced Field show a picture of great momentum and imposing beauty, being reputed as "unrivalled in the world" and made one of the best scenic spots in China.

The Longji Rice Terraced Field (Chinese: 龙脊梯田; Pinyin: LóngjíTītián) are located in Longsheng County 108 km (2 hours drive) from Guilin. They are built along the slope winding from the riverside up to the mountain top, the highest part being 880 m in elevation while the lowest part 380 m in elevation. The coiling line that starts from the mountain foot to up to the mountain top divides the mountain into layers of water glittering in the sun in spring, layers of green rice shoots in summer, layers of golden rice in fall, and layers of silvery frost in winter. The most popular rice terraces are: PingAn Rice Terrace and Jinkeng Rice Terrace.

Longji means "Dragon's Backbone". When climbing to the top of it and looking down on the nearby terraced rice fields, you will have the feeling that you are standing on the dragon's back as the terraced rice paddies look like the shining scales of the dragon.

Dragon's backbone terrace was first built in the Yuan dynasty and completed in the Qing dynasty as the crystallization of the wisdom and labor of the Zhuang people.

The best time for a good photo is in early June, when the paddies are pumping with water, the villages are transfering young plant of rice from the seed bed to large areas of rice terrace.

Zhuang and Yao people live in this Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces scenic spot, and mainly are Zhuang people. Their dress is unique. Here you can feel the original Zhuang people's feelings. You can enjoy some dancing arts, such as pole dancing and lion dancing from Zhuang and reedpipe dancing from Yao. Also, you may come across the local customs of long hair combing (It is a way women comb their hair). Besides, you can also enjoy the simple living rooms in the zhuang villages, pure Longji(the dragon's backbone) tea and Longji wine.
