| Gongga mountains (Chinese:贡嘎山;pinyin:gònggǎshān): At an elevation of 7556 meters, Gongga Mountain is the easternmost 7000 m peak in the world, the third highest peak outside of the Himalaya/Karakoram, and the highest peak in Sichuan. In Tibetan language, the word "Gong" means sovereign and "Ga" means pure white, therefore Gongga mountain is regarded as holy and pure mountains by local people. It has a total length of about 14.7 kilometers (approx. 9 miles). Moreover, it is unique in itself for it is a low-altitude glacier. Its lowest point being at an altitude of 2,850 meters (about 9,350 feet). It is also a kingdom of animals and plants, with above 4880 plant species and more than 400 animal species. Glaciers. Hot springs and forests co-exist there. |
