Huanglong
|
Huanglong is known for its colorful pools formed by calcite deposits, especially in Huanglonggou (Yellow Dragon Gully), as well as diverse forest ecosystems, snow-capped peaks, waterfalls and hot springs. |
| Huanglong (Chinese: 黄龙;pinyin: huánglóng): Located in Songpan County, Huanglong enjoys the name of 'World Wonder' and 'Fairy Land on Earth'. Huanglong is a 7.5 km (5 miles) long valley, 3,000 m (9,845 ft) above the sea level in the foothills of the snowcapped Min mountain range. It is known for its colorful pools formed by calcite deposits, especially in Huanglonggou (Yellow Dragon Gully), as well as diverse forest ecosystems, snow-capped peaks, waterfalls and hot springs.
The Huanglong Scenic Area is composed of such 5 parts as Huanglong Valley, Danyun(Red Cloud) Canyon, Xuebaoding(Snow Ridge), "Red Heart" Rock and Mounigou Gully.
Huanglong's major scenery is concentrated in the 3.6-kilometer (2.2 miles) long Huanglong Valley that includes snow-clad peaks and the easternmost glaciers in China. The total length of the travertine is 3.6km and it is thought to look like a huge golden dragon wheeling through the snow-capped mountains of the valley. Thus it was named 'Huanglong Valley' (Yellow Dragon Valley). The colours of Huanglong’s waters consist of various yellows, greens, blues and browns. The flowing water appears as golden ripples dazzling in the sun. Known to the locals as “Golden Sand on Earth” the Huanglong travertine bank is the largest and most magnificent in the world.
It was included in the UNESCO world heritage list in 1992. |
