The Family Qiao's Grand Courtyard

The Family Qiao's Grand Courtyard, built in 1755, this well-preserved and exquisite structure used to be the residence of Qiao Zhiyong, who was a famous businessman during the Qing Dynasty.

The Family Qiao's Grand Courtyard or Qiao Family's Compound, is located 20 kilometers north of Pingyao, built in 1756 during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). With the area of 8724 square meters,this well-preserved and exquisite structure used to be the residence of a powerful trading family with significant commercial influence even beyond Shanxi Province. The Qiao family' influence on trade ended in the l940's. Though 2 centuries have been passed, it still keeps its original splendor in architectural style. It was this mansion that was used as the setting for the famous film 'Raise the Red Lantern' directed by Zhang Yimou.
