Poyang Lake

Poyang Lake is the largest fresh-water lake in China and one of the biggest bird conservation areas in the world.

Poyang Lake (Chinese: 鄱阳湖; pinyin: Póyáng Hú) is the largest fresh-water lake in China. In addition, it becomes one of the biggest bird conservation areas in the world.

Poyang Lake is located in the northern part of Jiangxi Province, at the southern bank of the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River. It is divided into two parts by Songmenshan Mountain. The northern part is the water channel joining the Yangtze River and the southern part is the main lake. Having experienced many geological changes, Poyang Lake is now wide in the south and narrow in the north, like a huge gourd tied on the waist of the Yangtze River.

The environment and climatic conditions are suitable for migratory birds to live through the winter. It provides habitat for a half million migratory birds such as Grus japonensis, Anser cygnoides and so on, and it is a favorite destination for birding. At late autumn and early winter in every year, tens of thousands birds migrate over here from Siberia of Russia, Mongolia, Japan, Korea, and northeastern and northwestern China. It is here where the biggest group of white cranes was found in the world.
Since ancient time, the Poyang Lake has been one of the rich, economically forward areas in China and it attracted many historically distinguished characters. A great many of heroes’ stories have taken place here, including Zhou Yu trained his marine, Taiping Army and so on.

Splendid mountains and wonderful islands can be found everywhere around Poyang Lake. Numerous sights, including the Fallen-Star Boulder, the Big Solitary Hill in the lake, Zhouyu Dianjiang Platform and the Lake-View Pavilion etc., make the Poyang Lake more charming and attractive.
