Reed Flute Cave

Reed Flute Cave is famed as "A Natural Palace of Art", in which you can see lots of stalactites & stalagmites illuminated by the lights of different colors.

Located 5 kilometers northwest of Guilin city, the Reed Flute Cave(chinese:芦笛岩, Pinyin: Lúdíyán) is in fact a cave on the southern shoulder of the Guangming Hill (Bright Hill). Got its name by the reeds used for making flutes and pipes growing at its entrance, the cave is regarded as the largest and most impressive cave in Guilin city.

The cave is 240 meters long, whereas the touring distance is about 550 meters, mainly offering a magic fairyland of stalactites, stalagmites, stone pillars, stone curtains, birds, plants and animals in fantastic shapes and colors.

The cave used to be a lake underground. It became an empty cave after the mountain raised up. Rain water coming through the hill kept dissolving the carbonate inside the limestone rock and recrystallized later on the roof and the ground of the cave. Thus we can see plenty of stones growing down called stalactites and stones growing up called stalagmites. This cave is regarded as a “natural art palace”. The temperature in the cave is very stable in all year long. It’s between 15-23 degrees. So tourist feels cool in summer time and feels warm in winter.

Many leaders of China and foreign counties have come to visit Reed Flute Cave, including Deng XiaoPing, Zhu Rongji, American Former president Nixon, Carter, Bush and so on.

There is a 10 minutes walking from the parking pot to the cave. The shape of the cave is an irregular circle, tourist should walk 500meters to visit the cave. It takes about 45 minutes.
