Temple of the Six Banyan Trees (Chinese: 六榕寺; pinyin: Liù Róng Sì) is an ancient Buddhist temple built in 537 in the Liang Dynasty and it renowned as one of the "Four big Buddhist temple of Guangzhou" along with the Bright Filial Piety Temple, Hualin Temple, Haizhuang Temple.
Located in the Liu Rong Road (Six Banyan Trees Road) of Guangzhou Province, the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees was originally called the Baozhuangyan Temple, but during the Northern Song Dynasty, the banyan trees in the temple were celebrated in a poem by Su Dongpo, a renowned poet who visited the temple and from then on its name changed as the Temple of The Six Banyan Trees.
The amazing structure in this temple is the Flower Pagoda, which was built in 1097 and it's the symbol of the temple and the tallest ancient structure in Guangzhou-- from the outside it appears to have only nine storeys, but inside it has 17. Named for its colorful exterior, this 57 meter high pagoda is in the center of the temple, with a bronze column with 1,000 Buddhist sculptures on the top. The Flower Pagoda once had a square base in its architecture, but was given an octagonal shaped base after it was rebuilt in 1097. Early in the Ming Dynasty period, it suffered a fire and was rebuilt again, and it restored in 1900.
Due to the characteristic structure of the Flower Pagoda, Temple of the Six Banyan Trees was honored as the ten top most beautiful tourism scenery of Guangzhou in 1997. Climbing to the Flower Pagoda, one can enjoy the beautiful sights of the temple and Guangzhou City.
Besides the scene of the temple, you can also find something interesting surrounding, Liurong Road has a colorful array of souvenir shops selling ceramics, jade and religious ornaments. There is also a bustling fruit and meat market on Ruinan Road, on the right just before you reach the temple itself. |
