Ancient City of Gaochang was first built in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) as a garrison town and an important site along the Silk Road, and played a key role as a transportation hub in western China. |
| (Chinese: 高昌古城;pinyin: gāochānggǔchéng): Ancient City of Gaochang was first founded in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) as a garrison town and an important site along the Silk Road. It played a key role as a transportation hub in western China. The present remains of Gaochang City that was built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and rebuilt and enlarged in the Huihu period. It is surrounded by 10 meters (33 ft) high walls and most city wall remains were made of tampered earth. The ruins take a shape of an irregular square and it is composed of three sections: an outer city, an inner city and a palace city. After Gaochang City was abandoned during the early Ming era, most of its constructions were destroyed, with few well-preserved sites left. |
