Astana Ancient Tombs
|
Astana Ancient Tombs are a series of underground tombs and served as graveyard of the citizens of Gaochang from 273 in the Western Jin Dynasty to 778 in the Tang Dynasty. |
| (Chinese: 阿斯塔纳古墓;pinyin: āsītǎnàgǔmù): Astana Ancient Tombs are a series of underground tombs and served as the public cemetery of the ancient Gaochang residents, both aristocrats and commoners from 273 in the Western Jin Dynasty to 778 in the Tang Dynasty. The complex covers 10 square kilometers and contains over 1,000 tombs. The cemetery was separated by gravel boundaries based on family. Each tomb is entered through a over 10 meters (32.8 feet) long slope. The dead, who had been wrapped in silks, and buried with many everyday items, are placed on an earthen or wooden bed in the back of the chamber. Due to the arid environment many, important artifacts have been well-preserved at the tombs, including natural mummies. |
