Beziklik Thousand Buddha Caves
|
Beziklik Thousand Buddha Caves are complex of Buddhist cave grottos dating from the 6th to the 14th centuries. |
| (Chinese: 柏孜克里克千佛洞;pinyin: bózīkèlǐkè qiānfódòng): Beziklik Thousand Buddha Caves are complex of Buddhist caves dating from the 6th to the 14th centuries. It is picturesquely situated high on the cliffs of the Mutou Valley, a gorge in the Flaming Mountains. The caves originally stored a collection of Buddhist murals in the Indo-Iranian style, which showed unusually marked western influences. Unfortunately, because of severe natural erosion now there are 83 caves in good condition and most have rectangular spaces with rounded arch ceilings. It is often divided into four sections, each with a mural of Buddha. The quality of the murals vary with some being artistically naive while others are masterpieces of religious art. |
