| Maijishan Grottoes (Chinese: 麦积山石窟群;pinyin: màijīshān shíkùqún) was the site of one of China's most important groups of Buddhist cavings. Miaji Shan got its name because it rise up spectacularly like a corn rick or haystack from afar. Maijishan Grottoes was first built around the end of the 4th century AD, and constructed successively during the 12 dynasties up to the Qing dynasty. Now it remains almost 200 caves, 7,200 sculptures, 1,000 squre meter fresco which are excavated on the cliff around 30-80 meters high from the ground. They are reached by a series of precipitous stairways. |
