Mt. Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve

Mt. Fanjingshan is believed to be the only well-preserved primitive forest ecosystem on the same latitude in the world.

Mt. Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve (Chinese: 梵净山;pinyin: fánjìngshān): Established in 1978, the reserve covers a total area of 567 square kilometers. In 1986, it was classified as a national reserve and in the same year, joined the "Man and Biosphere" nature reserve network of UNESCO. It is the main peak of the Wuling Mountain Range, located at the juncture of the three counties of Yinjiang, Jiangkou and Songtao in northeastern Guizhou. It is known for its large protophyte forest, the only well-preserved primitive forest ecosystem on the same latitude in the world, a treasure-house of plants and wildlife. There are more than 2000 species of plants in the region, of which more than 1000 are high altitude plants. 21 kinds of high altitude plants, including the dove tree, are are listed as national protected plants. Favorable nature conditions also provide an ideal habitation area for wild animals. Over 382 species of vertebrae animals were identified here of which 14 including the Guizhou golden monkeys and South China Tiger are national protected animals. The religious significance adds a splendor to the charm of Fanjingshan. It is a holy site for Buddhism and their adherents.
