Sugong Pagoda, known as the Turpan Pagoda among local residents is the largest extant old pagoda in Xinjiang and the only Islamic style pagoda among the hundreds of famous pagodas in China. |
| (Chinese: 苏公塔;pinyin: sūgōngtǎ): Sugong Pagoda, known as the Turpan Pagoda among local residents, was built in 1181 of the Hui calendar (1779) by Su Laiman II, the ruler of the Turpan Prefecture, to honor his father. It is a typical pagoda of Islamic characteristics and has a cylinder body made of sun-dried yellow bricks standing 37 meters high. The pagoda's body contains carvings of 15 kinds of patterns of Uygur traditional design. There are a total of 14 windows at various directions and levels. The pagoda displays the typical features of Uygur architecture. |
