Tunxi Ancient Street
|
There are hundreds of old but well preserved rows of shops, evoking a bygone era in buildings that are simple and elegant. It is a commercial street that is only for pedestrians. |
Tunxi (Chinese: 屯西; pinyin: Túnxī), a city steep in history, is a great bonus destination for tourists visiting Huangshan. It is the major gateway to Huangshan, the "Tunxi Ancient Street" can be found in this old city.
Tunxi Ancient street, is 67km (41 miles) SE of Huang Shan, 27km (17 miles) W of She Xian, which was originally built in the Song dynasty, with a length of 1,273 meters, starting in the west at Zhenhai Bridge, a stone arch bridge built during the Ming Dynasty, and ending in the east at the "Memorial Archway." Tunxi Ancient Street is narrow but deep and it's fantastic especially in the evening when the red lanterns light up and make for a festive atmosphere.
Tunxi Ancient Street is one of China's best antique markets, lined up with antique shops, like medicine shops, steelyard stores, teahouses, restaurants and galleries which have continued to maintain the characteristics and operational layout of ancient stores such as "shop in the front and workshop or house in the back". Many of these shops have more than one hundred years of history. Almost all the shops here sell traditional Chinese painting stationeries, where you can find the "Four Treasures of the Study". In this street, you can appreciate traditional Chinese curios and handicrafts, such as brush calligraphy, ink painting and woodcarving.
After arriving in Tunxi, the gateway to Yellow Mountain, it used to be that visitors would bypass this small town and head directly for the mountain. Nowadays, however, the beautiful countryside around Tunxi, with its paddy fields and gorgeous traditional architecture, provides a draw in its own right, and a visit here is well worth combining with your trip to Yellow Mountain. |
