Wuzhen Town

With a history of more than 1,300 years, the ancient water town, Wuzhen, is one of the top ten famous charming towns in China.

Wuzhen (Chinese: 乌镇; pinyin: Wūzhèn), an ancient water town in the south of the Yangtze River, with a history of 1,300 years, is one of the top ten famous charming towns in China. It is located in Tongxiang City, Zhejiang Province and at the center of the golden triangle formed by Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou.

Wuzhen has become a living fossil of ancient oriental civilization for its profound history and culture, graceful water town scenery, unique-flavored delicious foods, various and colorful folk-customs and festivals naturally endowed.

Within the town, there are now more than 40 hectares of late 19 century original buildings, and more than 100 ancient stone bridges of different shapes. It is just like a natural museum of ancient architecture. In the town, watercourses and flagstone streets extend in all directions and intercross here and there. The native residents live peacefully in their old houses by water, just like their ancestors did before a long time.

As the town is covered with numerous watercourses, the local people build water chambers on the back of their riverside houses, by erecting wood or stone columns in the river with boards arranged upon. Due to the four-kilometer-long water chambers, Wuzhen won the nice name "the last resting-on-water in China". Enjoying a boat tour, you will see endless great scenes of the households above water.

The beauty of Wuzhen is countless. One of that is the Wujin, which is very famous for its manufacturing by hand and its material with golden and silver. Besides the beautiful scenery, Wuzhen is also a "cultural ancient town". It is the hometown of modern Chinese literary giant Maodun, who was the first Culture Minister of China. There are the former residence and memorial of Maodun in Wuzhen.

When visit to Wuzhen, don't miss the delicate folk arts exhibition and the delicious dishes in Dongzha (East Street) as well as the temples in Xizha Scenic Zone which are religious pearls of Wuzhen.
