| Labrang Monastery (Chinese: 拉卜楞寺;pinyin: lābùlèngsì) is one of the six great monasteries of the Geluk (Yellow Hat) school of Tibetan Buddhism. It is situated at the foot of the Phoenix Mountain and the Daxia river to the south. The white walls and golden roofs feature a blend of Tibetan and Han architectural styles. The monastery consists of 18 halls, Six grand halls for the study of scriptures or sutras, Gongtang Pagoda, an academic institution, and an assortment of around 60,000 sutras. There once were more than 2000 monks in residence, but now only 500, as a result of the Culture Revolution. In addition, there are a large amount of Tibetan language books, including history, medicines, calendars, music and art objects. Nowadays, the monastery is an important place for Buddhist ceremonies and activities. From 4 to 17 January and 26 June to 15 July (these dates may change according to the lunar calendar), the Monlam festival will be held with a huge thangka of Buddha is unfurled and sanctified on a screen to the south of the Daxia River. |
