Yandang Mountain

Famous for its magnificent peaks, waterfalls and caves, Yandang Mountain is one of the China's top must-see mountains.

Yandang Mountain (Chinese: 雁荡山; pinyin: Yàndàng Shān) enjoyed the reputation of "a famous mountain in the sea" and "an unsurpassed wonder in the world", is one of the China's top must-see mountains. Yandang Mountain is located in Leqing County of Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province.

In autumn, wild geese gather in the marshes around the lake at the top of the mountain, hence the mountain got its name Yandang Mountain which means "reed marsh for wild geese". Yandang Mountain became known in the early Tang Dynasty and enjoyed greater fame during the northern Song Dynasty, when a large number of temples, pavilions and other buildings were set up here.

A Northern Song Dynasty scientist, Shen Kuo, had used two words simply describing the mountain which is "uniquely fascinating". It is dominated by crags, valleys and waterfalls, and there are said to be about 400 scenic sights in the eight scenic areas. The Spiritual Peak (Lingfeng), Spiritual Crags (Lingyan) and the Great Dragon Pond (Dalongqiu) on the southeast part of the mountain are considered as the "three wonders of Yandang Mountain".

The Spiritual Peak with a height of 270 meters, also called Husband and Wife Peak because at night it looks like a couple in each other's arms. Spiritual Peak is surrounded by grotesque peaks and cliffs, which are particularly striking at night. Among the three best wonders of Yandang Mountain, the Spiritual Crags ranks the most magnificent and forbidding. At one time, the beauty of the Great Dragon Pond cannot be expressed in words and all the wonders in Yandang Mountain wait you to discover and enjoy their beautiful scenery.
