General Yue Fei's Tomb
|
General Yue Fei's Tomb was built to commemorate the General Yue Fei, a celebrated national hero who performed meritorious deeds in countering the invading Jin army during the Southern Song Dynasty. |
General Yue Fei's Tomb (Chinese: 岳飞墓; pinyin: Yuèfēi Mù) was built to commemorate the General Yue Fei, a famous Chinese patriot and military general who fought for the Southern Song Dynasty against the Jurchen armies of the Jin Dynasty.
The General Yue Fei's Tomb is located on the northern side of the Qixia Hill and on the northern shore of the West Lake, Zhejiang Province. The tomb garden, the memorial temple of martyrdom and the inspired loyalty temple compose the compound.
Yue Fei (1103-1142), a patriotic general of the Southern Song Dynasty, led his celebrated Yue Family Army in repeated invasions of the Jurchen troops to recover large tracks of territory. He was framed by Qin Hui, a treacherous minister. His name was exonerated in 1162 of the Southern Song Dynasty, and his remains were moved to the present site in appreciation of his heroism. In 1221, a temple was erected beside the tomb in Yue Fei's memory. A stone monument in front of the tomb is inscribed with five Chinese characters reading, "Tomb of Yue, Duke of Song".
"The green hill is fortunate to be the burial ground of a loyal general; the white iron was innocent to be cast into the statues of traitors". Standing in front of the General Yue Fei's tomb which is under the state-level protection as a key cultural unit, Chinese visitors will compulsively feel an upsurge of emotion while reading the famous couplet on the gateposts of tomb.
Paying a visit to the Yue Fei's memorial temple and his tomb and reading aloud the clangorous lines in his poem named "The River All Red"; one could feel the echoes of history. Yu Fei's heroic deeds and passionate feelings add a special beauty to the elegance of the West Lake. |
