Yuelu Academy of Classical Education is one of the four most prestigious academies over the last 1000 years in China.

Yuelu Academy of Classical Education (Chinese: 岳麓书院; pinyin: Yuèlù Shūyuàn) is one of the four most prestigious academies over the last 1000 years in China. It was formally set up in the ninth year of the Kai Bao Reign of the Northern Song Dynasty, and from then on, it was a famous institution of higher learning as well as a center of academic activities and cultures.
Yuelu Academy of Classical Education is located at the eastern foot of Yuelu Mountain in Changsha City, Hunan Province. It faces the Xiang River with its back to Yuelu Mountain. As it is enveloped in stretches of trees that create a refined and tranquility environment.
Between 1165 and 1173 during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), renowned scholars Zhang Shi and Zhu Xi gave lectures at the academy. Engraved on both sides of the lecture hall walls, four huge characters read: faithful, dutiful, honest and integrity. The Academy, which has survived the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, was converted into Hunan Institute of Higher Learning in 1903. It was finally officially named Hunan University in 1926.
As a part of Hunan University, today the academy is a center of publication and research of the ancient Chinese language, and is one of the most important academic and cultural centers in China.
