Lanzhou, a well-known ancient city in China and the capital of Gansu, is the second largest city in northwest China. It is also the political, economic and cultural center of the province.

Dunhuang, an oasis on the eastern edge of the Taklimakan Desert, is a place renowned as the home of grotto art. The Dunhuang Mogo Grottoes is usually called "One thousand Buddha cave", a worldwide famous Buddhist relic. It is by far the most well-preserved Buddhist relic in the world; and also a post along the ancient Silk Road, with the largest scale, longest history, and richest content. Dunhuang Oasis was the terminous of the eastern section of the Silk Road and the starting point of the middle section of the Silk Road.

Major places of interest in the province include: The Iron Bridge at the foot of the White Pagada Mountain, the White Pagoda, Five-Spring Park, Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes (World Heritage Site), the Crescent Spring Lake, Sing Sands Mountain, Jiayu Pass (Jiayuguan), Overhanging Great Wall and others.
