Xinjiang is located in northwest China. It is the largest and most arid province, and also contains the hottest and the coldest places in the whole country. It is divided into two basins by the Tianshan Mountains; froming the Tarim Basin in the south and the Jungar Basin in the north, hence the name South Xinjiang and North Xinjiang.
Xinjiang is one of the most interesting places for travellers. Xinjiang has long been known as the "Land of Fruit and Melons.", the"Land of Jade and Gem.", and also as the " Home of Songs and Dances." There are snow-capped mountains, hot basins, dense primeval forests and a vast desert. Xinjiang, on the Silk Road, was once a center for cultureal exchange between the East and the West. Folk arts, customs, and a special ethnic culture all help attract visitors from home and abroad.
Ürümqi, the capital of Xinjiang, is the farthest city in the world from an ocean. The main attractions of Ürümqii are Heavenly Lake and Southern Pasture. Besides charming scenes, Ürümqi is also a good place for shopping.
Kashgar is a must-be place to see in Xinjiang, for it is said:"You have not been to Xinjiang unless you have been to Kashgar." It is located at the most western edge of the southern part of the province. Everything there is attractive to outsiders: the bustling free market, the mosques, the families going to and fro in their donkey carts, as well as the men and women in their colorful embroidered caps.
The city of Turpan is a desert oasis, located in the middle of Turpan Basin. It is the lowest and hottest spot in China; graced with grape vines, mosques and abandoned ancient cities. Turpan holds a special place in Uyghur history, since nearby Gaochang was once the capital of the Uyghurs. It was an important staging post on the Silk Road and was a center of Buddhism.
